Fueling the Week

I've been flying solo for a few weeks with the hubby kicking it the Caribbean. Another day at the office for him....
With that said staying properly fueled has been that much harder. I feel like there's so much more to do and so much less time.

To stay properly fueled throughout the week, I ultimately rely on these two staples:

To help stay on top of things I've been making a large batch of steel cut oats and quinoa/veggie combo to last me a week. Although I'm definitely sick of the same stuff towards the end of the week ~it's a HUUUUGE time saver. Especially given that steel cut oats take a good 20-30 minutes to prepare. My favorite quinoa recipe is the black bean recipe I posted a few weeks ago.

These items are also conveniently gluten free.

In other news this week, I have joined up with a new local triathlon team. I am in dire need of new training partners and some new triathlon friends in the NOLA community. Regardless of how it works out, I LOVE LOVE LOVE their style.
So far they've been pretty awesome and fast and I'm looking forward to many hurt fests in the near future :)

Getting Settled in the Big Easy

Here I go again getting behind on my blogging...That's what happens when I visit my hubby! Priorities right???

This weekend I made my second trip to New Orleans to help Scott get settled in our new house and to complete my second round of interviews for my year long DPT clinical rotation. It was a crazy-jam packed weekend which I will get to a little later.

Before I left Thursday, I had the privilege of meeting sports nutritionist, Leslie Bonci in my DPT wellness class. While I'm sure most of you have never heard of her, she is a big-wig nutritionist for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penquins, Pitt Football, Runner's World, and many big name athletes like Usain Bolt (the worlds fastest man!). You would think world's fast man would be eating a strict diet consisting of lean protein and lots of fruits and veggies? Right??? Wrong! Before he met Leslie, his diet relied heavily on chicken nuggets. Yes! The world's fastest man eats chicken nuggets! Just imagine how much faster he could be! Anyway, I thought I would pass this along as I thought it was kinda funny! For those of you who can't get your diet right, there is hope :)

But just to share, one of her main points was that athletes never take in enough protein... I know this is always a downfall for me. We need to take in 0.5-0.7gram/lb of body weight which equates to an average of 60-70 grams per day. And for my MEAT HEADS out there, your body can only take in 20 grams of protein at a time. Forget those expensive SUPER PROTEIN mixes, you are peeing it out! That is some expensive urine yo!

But back to the weekend.... I arrived late Thursday and settled in. Friday Scott and I bought new house furnishings, decorated, organized, and re-arranged. Although our Naw-lins house is adorable, the set-up is just totally awkward. Back in the day (100 years ago), one was taxed based on how many doors there were. Because of this, closets were a rarity. Which means now=NO closet space! Scott's closet is filled without me even there, so we decided to make one of the smaller rooms a nice walk-in. Problem solved! Except for the moving part.....Scott soooo put me to work. In between my manual labor, I did my two interviews one at a Sports Medicine clinic and the other at an Outpatient Clinic.

The Sports Medicine place was sweet with underwater treadmills, basketball courts, and turf. The main population is ATHLETES! YAY! The other place wasn't as cool, but was within beach-cruiser distance from my house.... The final decision is up to my school, so we shall see! Less than 5 months and I'll be back in the dirty south with my hubby!

Anyway the rest of the week was much of the same... moving...organizing...reorganizing....In between, Scott and I squeezed in some workouts at the Reily Center at Tulane and went for some runs. The facilities there were awesome and I look forward to my future workouts there.

But for now, I'm back in the burgh and ready to finish the last push of the semester until finals~Lastly, I wanted to say congrats to Beth and Chad for rocking Clearwater! And can't forget my triathlon BFF Kim, who broke her clavicle...... Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
