Heart Rate Training

Although I've been a runner since I was a little kid and even ran in college, the whole heart rate training idea is still pretty novel to me. The 400 meter hurdles and heptathalon didn't exactly require heart rate training. I'll be honest.....I wasn't too excited going into it this season as I hate over analyzation. In fact, I 'm not a details person at all! Keep it simple and look at the big picture right???

WRONG!

The fine details that go into triathlon annoy the crap out of me. If I have a watch and and remember my heart rate monitor on the same day that is a plus :) Forget compu-trainers...power meters... and other crazy analytics. Yah- I know biofeedback may work but don't go there-

Over the past month especially, I feel like I've made leaps and bounds in regards to my running. Before my mentality was "go hard" all the time. I had one gear and one gear only. I caught on quickly after my first few runs when my rate ave was 160-170 bpm.

For some reason, I thought going slower would equate to losses in speed and fitness. Once I said goodbye ego and fear and started adhering to the ranges, things have changed. I can now power up hills and actually stay in my heart rate range. I know how to anticipate the hills and actually control the speed. While my training partners weren't necessarily happy adding a minute plus onto my mile pace, I can finally see fitness improvements.

My speed DEFINITELY is definitely not there yet, but there is still time for that to come right? I guess maybe the whole heart rate training thing does work?

  1. great post! i've mentioned keeping it simple in my blog several times and totally agree with you. i don't need a garmin, a heart rate monitor or any rocket science type charts or programs to know what i need to do. once training starts getting too complicated, i'm tuned out. i go by feel...i know when i'm going to easy or too hard and i don't train at race pace. simple as that and i've done great with that mindset.

  2. I am a big HRM geek, I have found that as a non natural athlete it has made crazy differences for me over a short time. I like to hear that fast people see results as well! Hopefully in the long term, I can become a fast(er) guy! Happy training!

  3. I hear you on having to pay attention to the details of training! I am still trying to figure out the whole compu trainer/polar heart monitor thing!
    For me though, one detail that has GREATLY improved my running is paying attention to my cadence.
    THAT has been awesome for me.

  4. funny how a person is a triathlete and a PT without attention to detail! Come on girl! Physiology dictates performance! May be you should have came to Vegas for a internship! The gravy is in the details......looking forward to hearing more about your progresss!

  6. I'm not a heart rate trainer. Might have something to do with the exercise induced tachycardia though (my warm-up HR is 155ish hah). I only wear my Garmin for long runs to keep myself honest & to get the total distance.
    You need a BRIGHT pink HR monitor. Then you'll have no excuse for forgetting it because it will stick out like a sore thumb in your house :)

  7. I never really used a HR Moniter until Coach Jen included it in her plan. Now I LOVE it and it has taught me alot about my effort levels. I think it's key in training but there are differing opinions on using the HR monitor.

  8. I did get a garmin for Christmas and have been putting it to very good use :) But it is purple.. I traded pink for quality this time around ..

  9. I love training with heart rate monitor. It's really true when they say you need to get slower to get quicker. Embarrasing yes, but oh so true.

  10. Wow! I was going to write a blog EXACTLY like this but you've done it for me!! I've never done the HR training either until now. I'm actually very discouraged with it all as I'm running like three mins (yes three mins)slower than what I would call my normal pace. I worried/worry about all the same things, especially losing my speed. Well on Saturday I raced and I held under a 7min/mile pace which I haven't been able to do since moving to "high altitude", so I hate to admit it but I think it works!! Good luck on your end with it and let me know how you do.

  11. ha. I was just going to write a post about the same thing! what happened to the simple purity of swim bike run? I'm totally resisting the whole power meter idea. I don't want to overanalyze every single workout! Seriously though, it's good stuff and it helps out but I hear you 100%! we have way too much in common.

  12. I dont use an HRM any more. I go off feel now. Its one less number for me to worry about, we all know how we obsess over numbers.

    I am a Wings fan, I see where your profile says your from. So that makes it 1-1, though I do not see either team making it to the finals this year, if your team is who I think it is.

  13. That is why you will be a great PT: you can see the big picture while still acknowledging the smaller details but not getting bogged down . Bingo!
